If nothing else id check the fuel pump and see if the tank is dirty, almost every toyota that sits up gets rust in the tank we had a truck like that once it would bog out but it wasnt nessasarly happening on a hill just anywerePosted 08-31-2010 at 04:50 AM by wesley4x4

Hate to say it but sounds like a typical 22r!!! Sometimes I would have to even get into 3rd on the highway up hill, if I were you start small like checking your filters and giving your carb a good cleaning with carb+choke cleaner, but in my opinion its just the little engine that could. Start savin son, soon your gonna be moddin that little guy ;)Posted 09-03-2010 at 03:47 PM by A-ron

what size tires are you running and with what gear ratio.......When you say bog down do you mean the motor spits and sputters or does it seem like the motor does not have enough power to push the tires?Posted 09-04-2010 at 05:22 PM by Josh Hester

ok, 33's and 4:10s with a v6 or v8 will be fine. But you have to remeber, your only dealing with 100hp with the 22r. That is why a lot of people just put a v8 in thier yota, and keep the stock 4:10s. I have an 84 with a rebuilt 22r motor, bored 30 over with a 38 weber carb. going from stock to a 33" tire makes a huge difference with the 22r. Especially with steel wheels. I put 32/11.50/15 with steel wheels on my yota, and the difference was crazy! I felt like I had no power!! I put 4.88 gears in it and Dang!!! the difference!! it felt like I had my truck back. if you go 33" tire it is best to regear to 4:88,If you go bigger than a 33" use 5.29 gears. Also putting different gears in your truck is not just for the die hard offroader. All gearing does is make it easier for the motor to push the bigger tire that you are running. Hope this helps good luckPosted 09-05-2010 at 11:57 AM by Josh Hester

if you want power, check out lcenginering. They build some pretty tough 22r motors. You can either buy a complete motor from them or just blueprint your own. If you wanting to bore your motor, it cost about 10 to 20 bucks a cylinder at a normal machine shop. Put the gears in first though. Trust me. you will be surprised. and you motor will be happier too. lolPosted 09-06-2010 at 01:31 AM by Josh Hester

oh and i was wondering if i could straight pipe my rig i pulled the cat already but im worried i wont have enough beck pressure without the muffler.
a buddie of mine said take it off and put like a big S shape in the pipe to get more backpressure but i dont know im just thinkin the more she breaths the better?Posted 09-07-2010 at 12:01 PM by nick-crain-87yota

Hey Nick, ... I'm not an expert, by any means, but I've learned quite a bit in the last few months, and I would say that straight pipe, on the 22r, is not always a good idea. Even the pipe size (1.75", 2.0" or 2.25"--what I have now) can make a big difference... but you don't wanna go too big or limit all the back pressure unless you have SERIOUSLY opened up the motor, intake, exhaust side and otherwise. Some LCE motors are pushing 300HP, as are some of DOA's motors and also Engnbldr.com's. There are many more, but they all have a couple things in common. Bored out, polished and ported head, oversized valves, performance cam, Big Bore Throttle Body(on 22re's) or dialed in Hypo Carbs(perfect balance figured out in advance) and then exhaust. Most of those builders, that I've spoken too, personally, all say "NEVER go over 2.25" with the 22 motors.....Unless it's a full on drag motor." I would imagine that the Muffler could provide enough back pressure to keep ya in the pony realm that you want. Call LCE and Engnbldr and just ask them, "Here's what I have, or what I'd be willling to do.... and I was wondering, how can I get the most out of it in regards to exhaust system???" I guarantee they'll answer you... not always the same answer, but usually pretty close. The guys at LCE have given me lots of tips without trying to sell me anything,.... Tod, at engnbldr was even more helpful. DOA? Tim helped me as well, but you'll likely find people on here that say, "DON"T BOTHER with him!" .... I can only speak by my own experience... Very nice guy that other 22 builders, including engnbldr have told me "VERY capable guy, ...great racing motors".
You must be in OR if you're not worried about smog, eh? lol.Posted 11-04-2010 at 11:16 AM by ChefYota4x4
