I don't know, have a look at it and if you can't decide, take a picture and e-mail it to me. Usually no need to bend the lever, almost nobody does so. Just make sure the inner boots and base plates are not causing any binding. None of those parts can be seen once the top decorative boot is installed. So don't worry about trimming back anything you need to in order to get the shifting working right again:

or both. You just need to to a little investigating to find out what is causing the problem and then the solution is usually obvious. If the lever is binding against the shifter boot base, cut it back. If it is binding against the boot, push the boot down or invert it.
