I think the 89's yes, but mine is a '95 and still has origional HG (Factory Recall!). But yeah, It was probably the early and the late trucks that had the good HG's...
As far as the 3.0 I have heard many things about it that I agree with.
The 3.0 is heavy and slow, yes.
The 3.4 is lighter, and has more HP, yes...
Bad Gas mileage, HG failure, and cramps the engine bay with harder than hell spark plug replacement.
But one thing for sure is, it is a Toyota engine. We should back it up and with all its flaws, it will still start up for me every day. Even with 193k miles, it is still running strong. You can't beat it in terms of reliablility, only match it.
Even when I do eventually swap for a 3.4, I will still not diss my old engine that brought me to where I am now.
Just some advice, is not not sink too much cash into it. No braided steel lines, or advanced equipment. Just put good oil's and filters and you will be golden.
