Id trust a used, 20 year old, $1000 jap bike, over any NEW chinese bike.
Honda,Suzuki,Kawasaki, or Yamaha ONLY. and in that order.IMO
Single cylinder Dual Sport Enduro would be a good choice.
Honda Nighthawk, Kawasaki ex500, Kawasaki klr650
Honda shadow, Honda Helix scooter. Old Suzuki GS Models, 250 to 1100
