A couple of things:
You will NOT save money by buying a motorcycle. Insurance will be much more on the bike then the car. You have gear, maintenance, tires, etc. on a bike. Once you start enjoying riding you will ride much more and therefore buy much more gas.
My suggestion would be a beater car. I picked up a 1996 Escort for $1000 with 100,000 miles and it's already paid for itself in 6 months. You will be hard pressed to find a motorcycle that is reliable enough to trust your life with for less then $2000 bucks. Anything less and you will end up finding that it turns into a money pit. This is just my opinion but I know for a fact my motorcycle costs me much more then it saves me.
