When I installed my trans oil cooler,I desided to also do a flush on the trans fluid and replace it with Toyota T-IV.I installed the cooler and once I had the lines off that go to the radiator I droped them into a 5 gallon bucket.Removed the drain plug from pan,let fluid drain, filled through the dipstick about 3 quarts.I then started the engine and watched about 2 quarts drain out of one of the lines, shut engine off(I removed the lines to determine the flow, one is output to rad.,other is return)I wanted to make sure that the output flow line was going to be connected to the bottom of the cooler...I then filled through the dipstick 2 more quarts.I continued doing this untill the fluid came out of the line clean(I think I ran 12 or s quarts through it,I had some old T-IV,when it would only come in those big white 4 liter tins)...hooked up the one line to the radiator, then through the new cooler, then to the trans.Started engine, put about one more quart in trans...Drove vehical for several miles, took about another half quart to finish it off.

I did this exact flush procedure to a friends 97 landcruiser with 221k miles!,He didn't want to spend $ on the T-IV,so we used Dex-III.Its been about a year now and he says the trans still feels like new to him.

I switched to T-IV,because I travel and I wanted a higher service interval on the fluid change.I can feel a differance after the T-IV,the trans seems a bit crisper.

Oh,one other thing I did not remove the pan and mess with the screen filter,Its only a fine mesh screen. The chances of it getting clogged to the point that it impeeds flow, and need to be replaced=smoked trans.I know I will probably get flamed for saying that, but I would love to hear how changing one has ever helped a TOYOTA trans.I know lots of Toyota master techs(I used to be one) and I have never ever seen it,along with all the 20 or so techs I know.
