I agree with Adrian, that small a change probably won't be worth the expense unless you can find complete thirds for sale for cheap.
In the early years of the V6 diff (up to about '91), 2-pinion V6 diffs weren't uncommon at all. AFAIK, '88 V6 diffs were all 2-pinion.
Also, to clear up a little possible confusion, the "pinion" in "ring & pinion" is not the same "pinion" in "4-pinion". They are entirely different gears. In order to swap from 2-pinion to 4-pinion, you have to get a different carrier. Swapping ring & pinions does not (usually) require this.
