If you mean attaching it directly to the gate, consider that you'll have to lift all that weight every time you close the rear. Ugh. Not sure if that's what you meant.
Also, just realized I didn't answer your original question, the 2nd gen carrier on the 1st gen. There's a white one around NoVA that I spot every few years, but it never has the tire on the carrier. The carrier has nothing solid to connect to in the 1st gen rear quarter, somebody transplanted one and found a lot of infrastructure in there that can't be removed or installed for the 1st gen.
